The Prairie Was on Fire: Eyewitness Accounts of the Civil War in the Indian Territory
Published in Hardcover by Oklahoma Historical Society (August, 2001)
Average review score:

Excellent book on Civil War in the Trans-MississippiMr. Edwards has collected excerpts from letters, diaries, newspapers, Official Reports, and other eyewitness accounts to document more than 100 hostile actions in the Indian Territory during the Late Unpleasantness. His "Introduction" is the best summary of the war in the Indian Territory that I've read in a long time. This book belongs in the library of any serious student of the Civil War and will be a "great read" for those who are only casually interested.

Prairie Wetland Ecology: The Contribution of the Marsh Ecology Research Program
Published in Hardcover by Iowa State University Press (September, 2000)
Average review score:

A long term prairie wetlands research projectAs a result of decades of conservation research we now understand the basic underlying value and fundamental necessity of sustaining prairie wetland ecologies for the overall well-being of the ecosystem, with implications for wildlife habitation, and the impact of human activity (including agriculture) upon natural resources. Henry R. Murkin, Arnold G. van der Valk, and William R. Clark have successfully collaborated in summarizing the findings of the Marsh Ecology Research Program (MERP) in Prairie Wetland Ecology: The Contribution Of The Marsh Ecology Research Program, which also reflects the contributions from ten field experts. This comprehensive and long term prairie wetlands research project was a joint effort of Duck Unlimited Canada and the Delta Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Station. Prairie Wetland Ecology is a superb and highly recommended introduction to prairie wetland ecology research in general, and MERP in particular, as well as providing a superbly informative background for further ecosystem research.

Prairie Whispers
Published in Hardcover by Philomel Books (May, 2003)
Average review score:

An exciting read from cover to cover!I am a 8th grade English teacher. I saw the review for this novel in The Horn Book. It was excellent! The plot is straight forward and the tension in the story does not let up until the last page. It is a good book to develop questions and ethical debates with your students. "What would you do" will be in your head as you read the entire book. Questions as to Clay O'Brien's true character will also come up. You also have to decide if Mary Kathleen O'Brien description of her husband is accurate. It is a good "thinking book. The book is a quick read with only 184 pages. The print is medium size as well. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a bit of suspense thrown in!

prairie woman by ld tamesI loved this book because I am oringinally from the west and I like the way that the author described the this heroine and her hardships in the old pioneer west. I think you should make this book more showable for the public. And I want to know when you get her new book? I like her writing!

Quilted All Day: The Prairie Journals of Ida Chambers Melugin
Published in Paperback by Sanpete Pubns (March, 1993)
Average review score:

Wonderful journal of a doctor's wife about her many quilts. This is the journal of the wife of a country doctor. Her life revolved around the quilts she made for her community, and her daily journal reflects this, naming her trials and successes, especially with her quilts. The pictures of the quilts were beautiful, and made me use her quilts as wonderful patterns for my own quilts. Reading her journals made me feel as if I were in her shoes, taken back in time. I enjoyed this book very much.

Reflecting a Prairie Town: A Year in Peterson (American Land and Life)

Reflecting a Prairie Town-A Year in PetersonVery informative not only in the happenings of a year in and around the town of Peterson, but also an in-depth and easy to understand history of the area begining with the formation of the land during the glacial age. The black & white photos rival the quality of Ansel Adams. This book is more than just and excellent coffee table print. This could be any midwest farming community.

Restoration in the Barren's: The Story of a Young Teen's Strugle to Rebuild His Life While Helping to Rebuild a Local Prairie
Published in Paperback by Big Bluestem Press (May, 1999)
Average review score:

It's a coming of age story about a teenage boy's struggle.I loved this book. The writer knows what happens to young adolescents when they don't "fit in" to their high school society. They get harrassed, rejected, taunted and humiliated, and some teachers look on and fail to protect, even seem to sanction. But the grieving young man in this fast moving story takes to the near by woods and prairie, studies the plants and animals, hangs out with the natural world. And is richly rewarded by being needed in a restoration project. The story could not be more timely, when we are all talking about teenage anger and its sometimes tragic expression. Edith Nash
